Hunting

Northwest Kansas is rich in wild game, and, few hunters! Well known for excellent pheasant hunting, our section of the state also has both whitetail and mule deer populations in addition to antelope. Access to hunt private property is usually not a problem. Most landowners will allow you to hunt as long as you ask first. Approximately 97% of Kansas land is privately owned and a hunter is required to get permission from the property owner prior to hunting. Please respect their property & keep gates closed. This helps to ensure good landowner relations for the future.

Walk-In Hunting Areas (WIHA) are also located near the Tumbleweed Cabin. These areas are hunting areas arranged through agreements with private landowners and the state of Kansas. These WIHAs' are available for foot traffic only and are open either September 1 or November 1 through January 31.

These links will identify the WIHAs' near the Cabin:

Other public hunting areas include Logan State Lake and Wildlife area and Sherman State Lake and Wildlife Area. (See WIHA map links). Norton Wildlife Area is approximately one hour northeast of Colby and Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge east of highway intersection 9 & 183 lays claim to the "Goose Capital of the Country". You will find excellent waterfowl hunting there.

Another hunting option is a Controlled Shooting Area (CSA). A number are located in the area. Smokey River Rendezvous is a short 30 minute drive southwest of the Tumbleweed Cabin. This CSA offers pheasant, quail, and chucker hunting on about 4,000 acres. Here is contact information for two of the local CSA's:

  • Smokey River Rendezvous, Winona, Logan County; 4000 acres. Contact Jeff Harper at 785-846-7785
  • R & S Inc. Ringneck Country, Goodland, Rex/Sandi Murray @ 899-5882; 2320 acres

Tumbleweed Cabin has a freezer available for storing game and an adjacent Butler building is a good place to hang deer & antelope. Shells and other sporting goods can be found at a number of locations in Colby:

  • Pirates Den, Colby
  • Super Wal-Mart, Colby
  • Orscheln's Farm & Home, Colby
